Building with Books:
BwB is a not-for-profit organization that engages primarily urban youth through after-school programs as well as in their classrooms. BwB integrates global education presentations into social studies classes and BwB’s after-school programs enable students to perform extraordinary community service projects in the U.S. while helping to build schools in developing countries around the world.
BwB has programs in schools in New York, Connecticut, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Illinois and California. During the past year, BwB students in the U.S. have contributed nearly 70,000 hours of service, working with elders, the homeless and young children. 97% of the high school students in the U.S. that BwB has worked with over the last five years have gone on to college.
Since its founding in 1991 BwB has built schools in remote villages of developing countries on four continents. We have just completed construction of our 200th school. More than 100,000 children and parents have now attended the schools that BwB has built around the world!
Overview of the Position:
The Vice President – Chicago is responsible for raising funds regionally to support BwB’s regional budget and beyond. The goal is to raise the funds to support the regional programs and to build and maintain a 50% reserve for the region. The Vice President will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer, with whom he/she will work closely on all fundraising activities. This position will also be part of the CEO’s Leadership Team and work with the CEO on strategic recommendations. The Vice President must have experience and provide leadership in all areas of fund raising. The position requires excellent communication skills, as well as strength in building and maintaining relationships.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Recruiting stakeholders in Chicago to drive the regional fund raising effort
- Leading and expanding the Chicago regional board
- Recommending growth objectives for program to the CEO and fund raising objectives to the COO
- Leading and improving BwB’s regional growth funding model in Chicago
- Managing the regional development director
- Overseeing all regional special events which are managed by the development director
- Identifying and cultivate individual major gifts prospects through the implementation of a major gifts program
- Overseeing the individual giving and corporate giving programs run by the development director
General Qualifications:
- The qualified candidate should demonstrate strong presentation, persuasion, oral, and written communication skills
- Strong management experience and people skills
- The qualified candidate should be highly self-motivated, possess strong organization skills
- Ability to adapt to a flexible, fast-paced and dynamic work environment
- Consistent with BwB’s core values and mission statement, she or he must have an appreciation of BwB’s program focus
- Team player with positive attitude is a must
Fund raising Qualifications:
- At least 4-6 years of direct fundraising experience
- Knowledge of Chicago area corporate relations, individual donors, special events and major gifts highly desirable
- Ability to plan and implement concurrent projects
- Bachelor degree required
